Middle Street

This view is taken from the back of the public library, following the approximate line of Middle Street from Broad Street to King Street.   The junction with King Street is in the centre of the picture, in front of the Royal cinema (now an amusement arcade).  The shop fronts opposite show that the street was little wider than a single car, in common with most of the streets in the old town.

This whole area was destroyed by enemy bombing in WW2 and is now operated by Dover District Council as a public car park, but it used to be a warren of streets, lanes and alleys.  Five Step Alley can be seen rising up to the right of the picture behind the trees.  The white van (far right, centre) is near the entrance to Short Street.
